Step Two – Choose your Program
Once you have determined the appropriate Pathway towards certification, you will choose the seminar dates that work best for you. The institute for Childbirth Education offers the Lamaze Seminar, which is one step to help you achieve the designation of Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator.
Through the Canadian Institute of Childbirth Educators, you will work through the content of the Lamaze Study Guide at your own pace and immerse yourself in the recommended reading and journals. When you are ready, you will register for a Lamaze Accredited Childbirth Education Seminar. Once you complete the Seminar you are expected to sit the exam within three (3) years of attending. You must also complete and submit documentation that you have completed a practice teaching with a mentor or observer. You will arrange this on your own, however we will review the evaluation completed by the educator who has observed you. Once you’ve completed these two assignments and created your course outline, you will have completed the program.
Step Three – Purchase the Lamaze Learning Guide Cost Approx. $225 (US Funds)
The Learning Guide is the Core Curriculum that is used in the Lamaze Childbirth Education Program. Order directly from Lamaze International HERE or (800) 368-4404.
Step Four – Attend Your Lamaze Accredited Childbirth Educator Seminar
In addition to having the knowledge necessary to present evidence-based information, Lamaze Childbirth Educators use interactive teaching strategies that involve students in their learning. During your seminar, you will learn creative and fun teaching strategies for group activities and practice using innovative teaching aids. You will also begin to work on your class curriculum as well as learn how to prepare to sit the Lamaze exam with confidence.
Step Five – Sit for the Exam
Lamaze Certification is achieved by passing the Lamaze International Certification Exam, which is offered twice a year (April & October). To be eligible to sit the Lamaze Exam you must complete the following:
- Study from The Lamaze Childbirth Educator Study Guide
- Provide a certificate of completion of a Lamaze Accredited Childbirth Education Seminar. The Institute teaches several seminars a year in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
Provide documentation of your practice teaching experience.
